George Roulhac Pre-Med Scholarship
Dr. George Erwin Roulhac, Jr., a retired neurosurgeon, died on June 24, 1994 at the age of 78.
Dr. Roulhac practiced medicine in St. Louis for 40 years as a partner in Neurosurgical Associates. He was a former staff member at Barnes Hospital and was on the faculty at Washington University and the University of Missouri medical schools.
He was a native of Florence, Georgia. After graduating from Vanderbilt University Medical School, he came to St. Louis in 1941 as an assistant resident in surgery at Barnes Hospital. Shortly after, he was appointed to the staff at the Washington University School of Medicine.
Later, as a clinical associate professor at the University of Missouri, he helped set up a CAT-scan machine at St. Luke’s Hospital, the first at a private hospital in St. Louis.
Dr. Roulhac was a founding member and past president of the Neurological Society of America and the Southern Neurosurgical Society. He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Cushing Society and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
He served in World War II in the 101st General Hospital Unit in France, North Africa and Italy. He twice volunteered for duty on the S.S. Hope, a floating medical center that provided care and training in Nicaragua and Tunisia during his tours.
An avid sportsman and golfer, he was a member of the St. Louis Country Club. Dudley R. Grove, an avid supporter of UMSL, is the daughter of George Roulhac.
Scholarship Criteria
- Recipients must be undergraduate students who enroll full-time at UMSL (12 hours per semester).
- Recipients must be pursuing a pre-med course of study.
- Recipients will have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
